ABOUT ME

Hi! My name is Erin, I've been living in Asia for seven years, reporting on Hong Kong, China, Laos and Cambodia as a freelance journalist and stringer.

I’m currently based in Taiwan after receiving a nine month competitive scholarship to study Mandarin at National Taiwan Normal University. I will continue my freelance work although I will primarily be focused on Chinese for several months.

I have previously freelanced for The Guardian, The Independent, Al Jazeera, Voice of America, The New Statesman, The South China Morning Post, Marie Claire, The Southeast Asia Globe, Forbes.com and other outlets. I have also covered Cambodia, Hong Kong and China as a Deutsche Presse-Agentur stringer.

While my forte is print media, during the 2019 Hong Kong protests I branched into live TV stand-ups for France 24 and Wion TV in India, while also providing live phone-ins to Voice of America, BBC, LBC radio in the UK and more. My live tweeting of the protests, particularly with video, also received extensive feedback.

I graduated from McGill University in 2012 with a Bachelor's in Philosophy (Honours) and continued my studies at the University of Hong Kong, where I received a Master's in Journalism in 2014.

Besides reporting, I also worked as a teaching assistant at the University of Hong Kong Journalism and Media Studies Centre from September 2017 to May 2019. Additional corporate work has included writing corporate content for the Chicago Booth Alumni Magazine as well as WSJ Custom Studios.
